Faculty member, Carol Squiers, is quoted in W Magazine:

His emphasis on character and setting is, in the opinion of ICP curator Carol Squiers, what separates him from his peers. “The model as an expressive human being will become more important in fashion photography,” predicts Squiers, who also judged The Shot. “In the future, models will need to be good actors.”

The Director Pairs Up with CFDA Designer Prabal Gurung for a NOWNESS Brief to Art Students

Stalking the underpasses of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in pieces from Prabal Gurung’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection, Norwegian model Erjona Ala commands a motley crew of skateboarding kids in director Bon Duke’s new fashion short. The collaboration between Duke and Gurung was part of an exclusive project in which emerging designers from the CDFA’s {fashion incubator}program and young photographers from the School of Visual Arts were brought to together to work on a brief conceived by NOWNESS, to deliver a fashion-focused re-imagining of the opening credits of a film. Using the sequence from cult skate flickLords of Dogtown as his inspiration, Brooklyn-born director Duke flipped the boys-only pack mentality of skateboarding culture by placing the eponymous female gang-leader at their core. “I wanted to take the lifestyle in Dogtown but add a twist to it.” Duke explains. “I wanted to show her control over them and appropriating their image. As it cuts to them hanging out and arm-wrestling it was another way she was in control.” The SVA’s pioneering one-year MPS Fashion Photography course was launched in 2010 by co-chairs Stephen Frailey and Art + Commerce founder Jimmy Moffat, who established fashion film as an integral part of the curriculum and who call on the likes of industry leaders Nick Knight and Tim Walker to act as guest lecturers.

Showing an exciting and diverse selection of wide-ranging works from various artists, the Christophe Guye Galerie is pleased to introduce its upcoming exhibition ‘Icons of Tomorrow’. Focusing on international contemporary fashion photography, ‘Icons of Tomorrow’ will present leading and internationally and nationally acknowledged artists that have been of great influence and have shaped the genre in recent years with their visionary visual language and thus will stand the test of time. As a visual representation of glamour, seduction, and dreams, fashion photography has always walked a fine line between commercialism and fine art. Committed to highlighting an international photographic practice that explores the boundaries between art and commerce, this exhibition will be focusing on photographers that have embraced the subject matter with a strongly conceptual approach, believing the artists shown in ‘Icons of Tomorrow’ will withstand the criticism that commissioned work cannot be art.

Dear Dave, Magazine and Fred Torres Collaborations present a conversation between

David LaChapelle and Lyle Rexer. This event coincides with David LaChapelle’s current exhibition, Earth Laughs in Flowers on view through March 24th at Fred Torres Collaborations. The exhibition features LaChapelle’s entire series of ten large-scale still life photographs being shown for the first time in the United States.

Born in 1963, David LaChapelle studied visual arts at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in New York. His photography career began in the 1980’s showing his artwork in New York City galleries. LaChapelle’s works caught the eye of Andy Warhol and the editors of Interview, who invited him to contribute to the magazine. Recent solo museum exhibitions include Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague, Seoul Arts Center Hangaram Design Museum, and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico.

Lyle Rexer holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University. He is the author of several books, including How to Look at Outsider Art (2005); and The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography (2009). Rexer contributes to a variety of publications, including The New York Times, Art in America, Aperture, and Tate, etc. He has curated internationally, including “Fernando Canovas,” at the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern and “The Edge of Vision,” for Aperture. Lyle Rexer teaches at SVA in New York and is a columnist for Photograph Magazine.
